Arctic Monkeys play ‘Mardy Bum’ for first time in four years
And John Cooper Clarke recited 'I Wanna Be Yours' onstage.
Arctic Monkeys treated fans to a rare performance of ‘Mardy Bum’ at the penultimate gig of their sold-out run at Sheffield’s FlyDSA Arena last night (September 21).
The band last played the song, which appeared on their 2006 debut album ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’, during their 2014 headline set at Leeds Festival.
John Cooper Clarke also introduced the band on stage with a reading of his 1982 poem, I Wanna Be Yours, which the Monkeys turned into a song of the same name for their 2013 record, ‘AM’.
The punk poet told the audience: “It’s a great honour to be here and that was my version. But it took these guys to make it go worldwide so I can’t thank them enough…my favourite band.”
Arctic Monkeys’ sixth studio album, ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’, was released in May. In his four-star review, NME’s Thomas Smith praised the “divisive” record as “a product of searingly intelligent design.”
The band is about to complete a run of sold-out dates at the FlyDSA Arena in Sheffield before embarking on a tour in the US.
They were nominated for this year’s Mercury Music Prize but lost out to Wolf Alice, who bagged the coveted prize for their second album,’ Visions of a Life’.
