BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG WILL STAR IN THE ADAPTATION

Back in 2011, news broke that Green Day's hit musical American Idiot would be hitting the big screen. The project apparently sat in development limbo for a few years, but now the gears are officially turning again — this time, with a little help from HBO.

In an interview with NME, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong confirmed that American Idiot is still due for a film treatment. "We’ve got a green light from HBO," he said. "The script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there, so I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shooting, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment."

Armstrong is still onboard to play St. Jimmy, whom he portrayed intermittently during American Idiot's Broadway run. And Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda is eager to get in on the action, too.

It's not currently clear whether the movie will be broadcast on HBO's cable channel or whether it'll see a theatrical release.

An adaptation of Green Day's 2004 album of the same name premiered on Broadway in 2010 and ran for 422 performances.

Armstrong will make his screen acting debut later this month when his new movie Ordinary World hits theaters. Hopefully American Idiot will be his next onscreen role not too long from now.
