The stars playing his publicist and first wife Angie have also been confirmed

The actor who will play David Bowie in the upcoming biopic Stardust has been revealed.

Johnny Flynn will play the iconic musician in the film, which will follow Bowie on his first trip to America in 1971; the tip that inspired the creation of his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust.

Joining Flynn in the movie will be GLOW’s Marc Maron, who will play the rock star’s publicist, and The Hunger Games’ Jena Malone, who will play Bowie’s first wife, Angie.

In a statement, Salon Pictures’ Van Carter said: “Johnny Flynn is one of the UK’s most talented emerging actors and a musician in his own right.”

Flynn has previously appeared in TV shows Lovesick, Brotherhood, and Vanity Fair, as well as films including Clouds Of Sils Maria and Beast.

The film will be directed by Emmy winner Gabriel Range (Death Of A President), with Christopher Bell on scriptwriting duties. The soundtrack for Stardust is reported to include performances by Bowie.

There is currently no release date for Stardust. Principal photography is expected to begin on the film in June.

Earlier this week it was reported that the first ever TV performance of Bowie as Ziggy Stardust had been unearthed after it was thought to be lost forever. The star made his TV debut as the iconic character on ITV’s Lift Off With Ayshea in June 1972 but the footage was not stored by the station, sparking fears that it would never be seen again.

Now, one viewer’s recording of the performance has been discovered and the footage will be televised as part of the BBC’s new documentary, David Bowie: The First Five Years – Finding Fame.
