What makes a seedbox... a seedbox to you.

Now I've been running a 'seedbox' for a few years now. I constantly tweak and adjust it

    - Large dedicated server purchased at a cheap large seller
    - Rancher/RancherOS for docker management
    - Docker for isolation
    - (Docker) Plex for media management and dissemination of media to my home
    - (Docker) PlexRequests to search for media -> Auto add to couch/sickrage
    - (Docker) Plexpy to keep an eye on what's watched, what is not
    - (Docker) Sickrage to keep ontop of my watched series
    - (Docker) Couch to watch for good movies to see
    - (Docker) Deluge to download the above (Might bin and use ruTorrent only)
    - (Docker) ruTorrent for rolling seeds (Seed new items then remove once I'm at 2.0)
    - (Docker) Syncthing to sync items to my home (where direct torrenting to any private/public trackers is unwanted)
    - (Docker) Jackett so I don't hammer any private trackers
    - (KVM) to run a secondary firewall/openvpn in-front of all of this

Now that to me is probably a seedbox-come-automated-single-click-watch-something-almost-immediately-box (mouthful).

I have never used a seedbox from a company that supplies just 'seedboxes'. Am I missing anything? Is there a reason people use these? Lack of knowledge of Linux? Lazy? No maintenance?

Why do you use a seedbox vs something like the above? Or do you do both? The prices ALMOST reflect the cost of a dedicated server, if not more.

Ultimately, is there something I'm 'missing' ? Are there newer better ways to do the above?

Im not quite sure where you are seeing similar prices. A lot of time seedboxes will all run on the same boxes with top specs, but what makes them differ is space.

I would love a dedi box, but cannot justify the cost. While that awesome set up is pretty great, I still cannot put out top money for the convience of not simply searching site individually. Maybe its because I dont watch anything niche or super high quality. In essence you really aren't missing anything, and if you want, pm me where you are finding such cheap dedis that they compare to seedboxes

I have been debating the same. Having the ability to set up like sick beard/sonarr and plex all seems very inciting, but as far as price for gig I just cannot provoke my self to make the switch.

i use a 5 euros seedbox. I use it with ftp and Kodi.

If i had money to buy a dedi, i would pay it for 12-24-36 months right away.

The most lazy thing to do in my point of view is having a dedi full autoamted. Yes.. you spend a few hours or a few days making it working but after that is just click and go.

i don't need too much but a dedi would be great.

Automation is nice, but most of the time it kicks you in the backside, sometimes though, people like myself prefer to spend days and days doing something 'automated' to save a few minutes every so often. Weird eh?

I managed to get around 1 gig / 0.005 euros per month, before tax (6TB Raid 0). Type 'serverbidding' in google. Quality of the hardware is probably questionable (You're renting pre-used hardware), but when you design it using scripted builds you can actually re-deploy elsewhere very quickly.

So I guess all of this is probably down to pure 'preference' rather than one route is better than the other.

the only thing that make me want a dedi is full control for plex. The down side is that cost to much for my needs. i don't see the point of having someting that i don't use. My home connection is strong, VPN i don't need, i don't have librarys, and i watch most of the things in 720p.

a better solutin is having some kind of setup at home where i download what i have on the seedbox, like movies in 1080p for the tv.

In the future when i will upgrade my internet at 1 gbps maybe i will upgrade the seedbox too. untill then, what i use now ( 100down/100up) is more than enought.

Seedboxes.cc have some nice boxes with some kind of plex ( worked well on my tv ) but the data cap is too low + expensive for me. If they had 200 gb space + 10 tb at 7-10 euros that was the best option for me.

I went through the description and it sure seems like a nice project. I wish you success as it will be a big help for many dedi seedbox owners.
I have a couple of questions. Does rutorrent come with addons like autodl-irssi or Ratio Rules, etc.
Do you have plans to integrate OpenVPN support to the package?
And last, it says on the website Quickbox can be updated directly from the user dashboard. Does it update just the core functions or any addon packages as well?

Thanks a lot and good luck with your project
