Windows 10 is alive and kicking and things are going impressively well for the new operating system on PCs, so Microsoft has all the reasons in the world to speed up its work on the very first updates.

And now, rumor has it that the first update is set to arrive as soon as this month, with some sources claiming that it could be launched for some computers sometime next week.

The Verge is reporting that Microsoft internally calls this update “Service Release 1,” which is actually the most obvious sign that Redmond doesn't plan to make any big changes to the operating system, but only fix some of the things that didn't go really well in the RTM build.

In other words, this is going to be an update mostly focused on fixing bugs and improving the performance of Windows 10, so no new features are expected to be part of this release. We know that many of you are waiting for extension support in Microsoft Edge, but there are very small chances to get this feature in SR1.

New update coming in October

The new Windows as a Service approach that Microsoft has embraced with Windows 10 is supposed to bring updates to customers at a much faster pace, so after this first release this month, another one is expected later this year, most likely in October.

Often called “Autumn Update,” the October pack of improvements could bring more enhancements to Windows 10 in terms of new features, including the aforementioned support for extensions in Edge.

Microsoft is said to be already working on the October update, but the company obviously doesn't want to share any details, as it's pretty clear that this update is work in progress and a lot could change until it gets the green light.

In the meantime, expect more minor updates to be shipped to Windows 10 as they're ready, so keep an eye on Windows Update all the time to find out when something new is available.
