Sony wants to attack the business market

Back at IFA 2014, Sony was one of the few companies that seemed to be taking tablets seriously. Most device makers concentrated on launching smartphones and phablets, but nothing noticeable in terms of slates was shown.

Except for the 8-inch Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, which is a portable, little device coming with PlayStation support.

Sony is also currently selling a bunch of 10.1-inch tablets, in the form of the Xperia Tablet Z and Xperia Z2 Tablet, but a new report says the Japanese company will be taking on the footsteps of giants like Microsoft, Samsung and Lenovo.
More huge tablets? You got it

Device makers just seem to believe that what the world needs is more huge tablets and Sony is no different. According to Taiwanese sources reported by DigiTimes, Sony is prepping to launch a 12-inch tablet in the first quarter of 2015.

The new tablet will come equipped with high-end specs and take advantage of a stylus, much in the vein of the Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2. Therefore, we can speculate, Sony plans to target it at the professional market or at least at people working with graphic-related applications.

Even if brand vendors are adamant about pushing tablets with large displays, industry watchers are quite skittish about whether these slates will actually succeed when they reach retail shelves.

Will Sony make it in the large tablet market?

Microsoft has also recently launched a 12-inch tablet which is touted as being a worthy laptop replacement. The device is marketed with a choice of three CPUs, starting with an Intel Core i3 and ending with an Intel Core i7 fitted with up to 8GB of RAM.

As for storage, users can opt between 128GB up to 512GB, while additional space is available via OneDrive and microSD card support.

Samsung also has a bunch of 12.2-inch tablets on the market, the Galaxy TabPRO and NotePRO models that arrive with octa-core processors and offer crisp 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution.

Last but not least, Lenovo also recently uncovered the 13-inch Yoga Tablet 2 Pro. Unlike the other tablets we discussed above, the company is marketing it as a multimedia consumption device, not an offering targeted at professionals.

The product comes with 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution and takes advantage of an Intel Atom Z3745 Bay Trail processor and Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box.

An interesting aspect is that Lenovo has slipped in a built-in pico-projector in the tab, so the device can be used to beam movies on any flat surface at your disposal.

Will Sony manage to offer something extra that will make customers want to purchase its new 12-incher? That remains to be seen.
