Keep in mind that this guide is over a year old. I followed this guide and built my machine in April 2012 and it is still a beast. Ive done a few upgrades such as maxxing out memory, adding an SSD, and adding several hard drives. It holds 4 internal drives with (i think its called) hotswap bays. you can pull em in and out really fast. There is a new model HP Proliant Microserver also.

You dont have to go this intensive if you dont want to. You can spend anywhere from $35 bucks on a raspberri pi or build an insane media center for $1500. its all up to you on what you want and your budget.
