Microsoft has just announced a new update for Windows 10 IoT Core Insider Preview that brings support for Raspberry Pi 3, the new version that’s now available for only $35 (€32).

There are no other improvements in Windows 10 IoT Core besides support for Raspberry Pi 3, and Microsoft says that more features will be introduced in the coming weeks.
“Optimized for connected things and smaller devices with or without a display, Windows 10 IoT Core brings the power of Windows, including enterprise grade security and servicing, automatic updates through Windows Update when connected to the Internet and the rich Universal Windows Platform (UWP) APIs that give apps easy control over system management features,” the company explains.
Raspberry Pi 3 is the latest version of the development board that comes with significant improvements, including a new processor that’s supposed to bring an important boost in performance, no matter the used platform. But on Windows 10, the 1.2GHz 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU is expected to lead to major speed and stability improvements, with Microsoft’s platform specifically optimized to work with this configuration.
The new Raspberry Pi 3 Additionally, the Pi 3 comes with 1GB of RAM and Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth support, thus making it a breeze to connect peripherals or get Internet access in a second.
Microsoft has used this occasion to highlight some of the improvements that the company has made since the release of Windows 10 IoT Core, suggesting that the series of updates is expected to continue in the coming months, especially for the Raspberry Pi 3.
“Since we first announced Windows 10 support for Raspberry Pi last year, your feedback has been driving how we continue improving our platform enabling more and more Raspberry Pi capabilities on Windows 10 IoT Core. We’ve made it easier to connect your Windows 10 IoT Core device to the Internet by adding support for the official Raspberry Pi Wi-Fi dongle and other common Wi-Fi dongles. Also, we brought you full support for the TX/RX pins enabling easy access to the UART by simply calling GetDeviceSelector (‘UART0’) method on the SerialDevice class,” Microsoft says.
The updated Windows 10 IoT Core is available for download right now from GitHub, and additional resources for Raspberry Pi3 compatibility are offered on the same page.
