After having killed the Modern version of Skype last week, Microsoft has pretty much confirmed the obvious today in a new interview, revealing that Skype won’t be offered as a universal app when Windows 10 lands.

Skype Senior Product Marketing Manager Aga Guzik has told ZDNet in a statement that Skype will continue to exist on the PC as a desktop application that also offers touch capabilities and pretty much the best you can get from the VoIP client right now, but those on mobile devices will get a different experience.

Without the touch-optimized version that was previously available in the store (and will continue to be offered to Windows RT devices exclusively), it was only a matter of time until Microsoft confirmed it, as the focus is now on making Skype for Windows desktop better and integrating the VoIP client more deeply in Windows 10 Mobile.

That’s actually the plan the company is going after in Windows 10: PC users will be able to install Skype on the desktop, while phone users will get an integrated client that will work with the universal Messaging, Phone, and Video apps.

Coming after Windows 10 RTM

The universal apps will work across all Windows 10 devices, including PCs, and will have Skype capabilities built-in. Users will have to log out Skype in the video apps if they want to stop running Skype, Aga reveals.

“With Windows 10 we wanted to truly build Skype into the platform so it's easier and faster for users to complete tasks at hand. This is why, later this year, we will be offering Skype built into Messaging, Calling and Video. For users who still want an all-in-one application, the all in one Skype app provides the best mix of navigation friendliness for both mouse and keyboards and touch as well as the features our users love,” the Microsoft official points out.

The new universal apps won’t be available on July 29, when Windows 10 launches, but will be released later this year with an update, most likely in the fall of 2015, when the new operating system is expected to receive its first important update.

At that time, in addition to these universal apps, Microsoft is also expected to release a bunch of other new features, such as extension support for Microsoft Edge browser.
