Microsoft Lost Count on Windows Versions

It looks like the software giant has finally lost count with Windows 9, because the company has instead jumped to Windows 10 as the name for its next version of the OS. Recently Microsoft skipped a number and officially announced Windows 10, the software previously known as Threshold and the successor to Windows 8 and 8.1.

A press event with a small gathering of reporters took place in San Francisco, where Windows head Terry Myerson explained that Windows 10 will be company’s “most comprehensive platform ever and it therefore wouldn’t be right to call it Windows 9”. The reporters didn’t see the logic of this – Microsoft could simply come up with a completely different name, but it instead changed the number order. However, we guess that the first digit being 1 indicates the new turn in the development of the software. Not that every ordinary user could easily grasp that.

Now let’s see what is really so different in this operating system. The event revealed that Windows 10 was designed to run across various devices with a wide range of screen sizes – from 4 inches all the up to 80 inch surface. The company will provide a single application platform with the single integrated Store in order to deliver Windows experiences across all those devices. Reminds Apple Store, of course, which has been functioning like this for many years.

However, the new system won’t make desktop users happy, because Microsoft announced that Windows 10 has been built for a “mobile-first, cloud-first world”. In other words, it means more of all the sort of thinking that made Windows 8.1 useless to serious PC users. In the meantime, the rumors are that Windows 10 will look a bit like Windows 7, largely because it features a hybrid Start menu, combining Windows 7 features with Windows 8 tiles.

Moreover, Microsoft seems to have realized that it has to pay attention to the enterprise and allow business users coming from Windows 7 or 8 to hop right in and be productive. The company also announced the “modern management” of lots of computers as its next priority.

The “Modern UI”, which hacked off power users, has gone in the new OS. Instead of the Modern UI, Windows 10 offers Live Tiles that are integrated into the right side of the Start menu on the Desktop. Pinned and frequent applications are located on the left. Windows 10 also provides a refreshed taskbar with a new “task view”, which shows all running applications. The newest operating system from Microsoft will allows users to tile up to 4 apps on the same screen.

Finally, the developers presented a command prompt that allows for using keyboard shortcuts, as well as copy and paste, and a Charms Bar, which may or may not make it into the final cut.

Not many details have been disclosed about the new operating system thus far, and the detailed technical preview of Windows 10 is expected to be released in a few days. The launch of the operating system is scheduled for spring 2015 – let’s hope that Microsoft won’t lose count on dates either.

I will never buy another Windows computer until they fix this crap. I HATE every single version of Windows after Windows 7. This is the main reason I went ahead and bought a Mac laptop.
