Canonical revealed details about a number of LibreOffice vulnerabilities that have been found and fixed in Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, which also upgrades the office suite.

Each new update for major packages such as LibreOffice is usually accompanied by vulnerabilities fixes, and the same can be said for the current release. The Ubuntu maintainers have been quick to upgrade the repos with the new packages.

"It was discovered that LibreOffice incorrectly handled certain HWP files. If a user were tricked into opening a specially crafted HWP document, a remote attacker could cause LibreOffice to crash, and possibly execute arbitrary code," reads the security notice.

This is just one of the vulnerabilities found and fixed. For a more detailed description of the problems, you can see Canonical's security notification. Users have been advised to upgrade their systems as soon as possible.

The flaws can be fixed if you upgrade your system to the latest libreoffice-core package specific to each distribution. To apply the patch, users will have to run the Update Manager application. In general, a standard system update will make all the necessary changes, and there is no need for a restart, but please keep in mind that it's a hefty update, and it might take a while, depending on your hardware.
