Microsoft released update KB4058043, a reliability update for Microsoft Store, for Windows 10 version 1709, the Fall Creators Update.

The update was released days after the December 12, 2017 Patch Tuesday, the last official patch day of the year 2017.

The update is a reliability update for Windows 10 version 1709 only, and did not change the build number on a Surface Pro 4 test system.

KB4058043, or Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems, is only made available via Windows Update. The update is not available on the Microsoft Update Catalog website, and not available through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

Microsoft published the Support article in time, and it reveals what the update is all about.

"This update makes reliability improvements to Microsoft Store and fixes an issue that could cause app update failures and cause Microsoft Store to generate unnecessary network requests."

The description reveals two things about the update: first, that it makes reliability improvements to Microsoft Store, and second, that it fixes an issue that caused application updates to fail and as a consequence have Microsoft Store generate "unnecessary network requests".

Microsoft does not reveal which reliability improvements it made however, and whether it addressed other issues with the update.

KB4058043 is installed automatically if Windows Update is configured to download updates automatically for the operating system. Users who want to install it right away can do it in the following way:

  1. Use Windows-I to open the Settings application on a device running the operating system.
  2. Go to Update & Security
  3. Activate the "check for updates" button on the page to run a check. If the update is not installed already, it should be returned afterwards.

Microsoft lists no known issues with the update. It is too early to tell if the update has issues however. Considering that the update fixes Microsoft Store and application update issues, it is fair to say that this is not a critical update that you need to install right away unless you experience issues with the Store or app updates.

I recommend strongly that you create a backup of the system before you install the update. A restart is not required however.
