Windows 10 is expected to come with a new design for the store, but that's not enough for such a greatly revamped operating system, many users say.

As a result, Redmond should try to make desktop apps available in the Windows Store as well, many posted in a suggestion on the Windows UserVoice platform, pointing out that this would clearly add a new layer of security and help user keep their computers clean.

At this point, the store already provides access to some desktop apps, but whenever you click on any of them, the store redirects you to the download page, so they cannot be downloaded directly as it currently happens with Modern apps.

That should change in Windows 10, many say, while others believe that a completely new store would make even more sense for PC users.
New store just for the desktop

While Microsoft is working to make the store better in Windows 10 by also providing quick access to universal apps and thus programs that work on other platforms, including Windows Phone, making desktop software available for PC users should be a priority, many users stress.

And since bringing desktop apps in the existing store would make everything really confusing, one user suggests creating a new store just for desktop apps.

“I would suggest a separate desktop program (with a desktop UI) for the desktop store. Although a unified experience is feasible, it does not seem to me that Windows Store will get traction from desktop users. A desktop store which purely offers desktop apps, combined with desktop-supportive UI (instead of Metro UI), seems to be more effective for the purpose,” he says.

Extra security for PC users

A desktop Windows Store would clearly lead to better security for users, as Microsoft would individually scan apps and thus offer everyone malware-free software that wouldn't pose a risk to their computers.

Obviously, this would also make apps easier to find for those running Windows 10, but there's no doubt that such a store wouldn't get through the same difficult times as the original one did when Windows 8 come out. The number of apps in the Windows Store is still below expectations right now, after years of struggle to convince developers to port apps to Windows 8.

As far as the desktop is concerned, there are millions of software solutions out there that work on Windows, so the only hard task would be adding them to the store.
