Buy a Mac and you'll never need anti-virus
Bit-Defender is great, and on autopilot it remains in the background when running movies or games. overall a great piece of software.
I have used almost all Anti Viruses. On system with Low RAM and CPU I recommend to use ESET and on common system with enough RAM and CPU, I thinks Kaspersky and Avast are great.
Take a look at Baidu antivurs, its clean and lite most of all totally free and blazing fast.
I use COMODO Internet Security Premium. It was free and is very good. It even blocked that "Homeland Security" computer lock down virus. However, it is not for the casual computer user. Once you have installed it, it will give you an alert every time you start a program for the first time asking what level of freedom/restriction to allow it. But once you have run a program it will remember your choice in the future. Also, whenever you install a new program it will alert you for each new process during the install, you can choose to treat the program "as an installer" and it will just ask once though. As a free program, I do get an ad from it now and then, but not more than once every few weeks.
It is more that just an anti-virus though. It is also a firewall and a sandbox. Another cool feature is a "virtual desktop." This will create a virtual OS environment that is isolated from the rest of your computer that you can use to install programs that you are unsure of.
Another cool feature is the Gaming Mode. When enabled, it will suppress things like alerts, updates and scheduled scans so you can game without interruption.
I have been a user for more than 4 years now and have not had a single virus or malware problem.
There are also paid versions of the program available that have additional features. I just use the free version myself and could not be happier with the results. All I can say is, get this program. Just be prepared for it drive you a little crazy for the first couple of days or even weeks depending on how often and how many different programs you use. Once you get past this phase and have set the rules for the programs that you run, you only get the alerts for new software. It is frustrating for a while. But I promise you it is more than well worth it. You can download it for free from them at comodo.com if you want to give it a try. You will not be disappointed.

i i really liked avira
After I fixed my uncle's computer recently that had a VERY nasty virus, I decided to invest in an antivirus and not just rely on security essentials for my $1300 custom built computer. Personally, antivirus is something that I'm VERY willing to pay for. Mainly because of all the updates. It can be annoying updating all the time, but the more updates the better with antivirus to attack new threats. So I decided to get a trial of Kaspersky Total Security that lasts for 30 days, then I can buy it half price for a year for 3 PC's. So only like $45 for the half price. It not only scans my whole computer including memory, but it also secures the web. If something could have a virus, there's a red icon. If the site is all clear it's green. I can set the program to scan any kind of external drive that I plug in to make sure the device is good. If I don't want it to automatically scan external devices, I can set it to "Ask me before scanning" as well as choosing full scan and quick scan. It also has a built in file back up. You can either have it backup every videos, photos, music, etc. or you can choose individual files/folders to backup. Then have it on a schedule to back up those files, and only backup the files and folders that are new sense the last backup. I put the backup on another internal hard drive, but you can do external or whatever. I HIGHLY recommend Kaspersky Total Security!
i have never had any problems with avg tbh
Gave up on AVG due to detection issues. Now I'm using Avira, which works fine for the most part, except that it consistently and infuriatingly persists in finding false positives in casual games I download for my kid. I know the games are clean. I trust the distributors. And even though I add tons of exceptions to Avira, somehow it just can't stop itself from randomly quarantining files in my downloads. I wish I could create an exception only for the exact kind of virus it thinks that it found.
