Microsoft claims Windows 10’s adoption is going exactly as expected, as 270 million devices have already been upgraded to the new operating system, which gets it closer to the 1 billion goal that it wants to reach by 2017.

And while this is indeed an important achievement given the fact that Windows 10 has been around for less than a year, there’s even more good news for Microsoft when it comes to its new operating system. Approximately 1 million computers have been upgraded to Windows 10 each day in March, according to estimates based on previous stats provided by Microsoft itself.
The Windows 7 mission The software giant said several times that there are 1.5 billion Windows devices out there (although this number might have changed since the debut of Windows 10) and the new OS had a market share of 15.6 percent in March, according to Net Applications. As CW estimates, this means Windows 10 is running on approximately 235 million devices, an improvement of 31 million during the last 30 days.
This means that approximately one million devices have been upgraded or have installed Windows 10 each day in March, if the aforementioned numbers are correct. If we use Microsoft’s 270 million devices figure, the final numbers point to more than 1 million daily activations of Windows 10 last month.
Without a doubt, Microsoft can only be pleased with the way Windows 10 adoption is going at the moment, but the company’s biggest challenge continues to be huge Windows 7 userbase that refuses to make the move to the new OS. Despite the free upgrade offer, that is.
Windows 7 support is coming to an end in 2020 and Microsoft clearly wants to avoid having to deal with another Windows XP moment when users might stick to an unsupported operating system for too long. To make sure that won’t happen, it needs to upgrade them as soon as possible, so when EOS comes, only a few users would still be running it. For the moment, not everyone is willing to upgrade, so it remains to be seen how Microsoft can adapt its Windows 10 strategy in the coming months to get more people on its latest OS.
