Apple’s CIA-like secrecy leads to all kinds of speculation regarding its products and the upcoming 4-inch iPhone makes no exception.

Initially believed to launch as iPhone 6c, but then allegedly renamed to iPhone 5SE, the new 4-inch model that the company is planning to debut next month might actually be called “iPhone SE,” according to a new report.
While this is still in the rumor stage, calling the new model iPhone SE actually makes sense because of a couple of reasons, including the way the company plans to improve this device in the future.
Without a number in its name, the iPhone SE could be excluded from Apple’s yearly upgrade schedule and thus remain a special model (it’s believed that the SE moniker could stand for “special edition”).
Furthermore, calling it SE could help Apple address the confusion created by the 6c or 5SE designations, as the company could end up having three different generations of iPhones on the market – 5SE, 6s/6s Plus, and 7/7 Plus (which this last one debuts).
Latest-generation hardware Clearly, Apple is looking for a name that would make more sense when iPhone 7 hits the market, and although SE could work, the 6c moniker just seems to be the more logical option, especially given the hardware that could be installed under the hood.
Rumor has it that the 4-inch model could come with the same CPU as the current 6s and 6s Plus – the A9, but also with 2 GB of RAM (there were sources, however, that claimed that Apple might be offering only 1 GB of RAM to reduce the final price).
But now this new report states that the 4-inch iPhone won’t necessarily be underpowered when compared to the existing 6s and 6s Plus, but smaller, so Apple isn’t necessarily looking to create a more affordable model. And yet, the iPhone 5SE is likely to take the place of iPhone 5s in Apple’s lineup and come with the very same price options (which start at $450/€410).
