According to Xbox head Phil Spencer, more Series X developments are on the way for August. Just last week, Microsoft held its second Xbox Games Showcase event, which showed off several brand new first-party exclusives and provided fans an enticing look at the highly anticipated Halo Infinite.

Promising games that were shown during the July Xbox Games Showcase included the creepy horror title The Medium, a reboot of the popular Fable franchise, and the long-awaited Psychonauts 2, the latter of which was heralded by a new theme song from Tenacious D’s Jack Black. Reception to the event was mixed overall, with many criticizing the undercooked graphics of the Halo Infinite gameplay footage. Still, it seems that Microsoft has even more surprises in store for fans next month.

Phil Spencer recently revealed that there is going to be some sort of Xbox Series X news in August during a YouTube interview with tech journalist iJustine. “I am encouraged to be able to talk more about [Microsoft’s Xbox plans]… should be August. I think August we’ll have more to say,” Spencer told her while keeping quiet about when it would take place specifically. Check out the interview with iJustine below – the August news is mentioned at the 18:30 mark:

Not much is known about what will be revealed during this previously hinted-at August Xbox event, but observers think it will feature more details about the Xbox Series X's vaunted backward compatibility with previous Xbox consoles and their games, as well as a less powerful, cheaper version of the Series X codenamed Lockhart. Meanwhile, the new Xbox console has been picking up considerable hype in recent weeks, with the developers of the Series X indie title The Gunk (which was also unveiled during the July Xbox Games Showcase) claiming that the Series X is more powerful than the PlayStation 5. Additionally, Valve president Gabe Newell expressed a preference toward Xbox’s upcoming system in a recent interview on a New Zealand talk show.

Microsoft has been playing catch up to Sony ever since the latter’s much-hyped PS5 reveal back in June, and many still feel that the Xbox producer has some distance to go before they can regain the lead they had at the beginning of the year. However, should this upcoming August news prove eventful, that gap could close even further.
