The Witcher Netflix series has boosted sales of the most recent video game astronomically, according to reports. Though the Netflix series follows the books more closely than the games and presents a different take on the same source material as do the playable installments of the series, it has succeeded in generating renewed interest in the already-popular games.

The Witcher 3 debuted in 2015. It is widely regarded as a masterpiece in its genre and has remained popular since its release, even inspiring a Nintendo Switch port years after the game originally made an appearance. The games differ greatly from the books on which they are based. The Netflix series, which was inspired by the popularity of the games, follows the source material more closely. And that, in turn, has generated more interest in the games.

A new report from The NPD Group reveals that the Netflix show is greatly boosting sales of the games. The research firm says that sales of The Witcher 3 rose 554 percent in December 2019 compared to the prior year. A lot of this was because of the Nintendo Switch port of The Witcher 3, but not all. Sales of the game on non-Nintendo platforms still rose by 63 percent.

The NPD Group also revealed that sales of the books rose 562 percent following the release of the Netflix series – a massive surge for the print world. The series itself boasts some astounding numbers. An impressive 75 percent of viewers who started the first episode watched at least 90 percent of it. Since an estimated 19 million watched at least 2 minutes of the first episode, that's a lot of people.

The Witcher, both on Netflix and the video games, are immensely popular with fans. While another game won't come around for quite some time – CD Projekt RED is currently working on the highly-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077. But the Witcher Netflix series shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. It's unclear when or if fans will see another game, but given the continued popularity of The Witcher, it's likely fans will see it happen at some point.

The Witcher 3 is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch
