Wasteland 2: Director's Cut, the sequel to the 1988 classic that inspired the Fallout games, is coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year. After being successfully crowdfunded through Kickstarter, Wasteland 2 was originally released for the PC in September of 2014. After receiving a visual upgrade along with other enhancements, the game was re-released as Wasteland 2: Director's Cut for the PC, the Xbox One and Playstation 4 in 2015.

Developed by inXile Entertainment and published by Deep Silver, Wasteland 2: Director's Cut is a turn-based, party-based RPG in a post-apocalyptic setting. The game allows the player to control a party of seven Desert Rangers. Four are completely customized by the player, while the other three are NPCs, complete with their own unique personalities and agendas. The game takes place in the western United States at a time where the world has been ravaged by nuclear war.

Nintendo has released a trailer for Wasteland 2: Director's Cut and has announced that the game will launch on the Switch in Fall 2018. The trailer shows off some of the mutated creatures you'll run into while adventuring their war-torn Arizona and California. We get a taste of the game's combat, character customization, and role-playing opportunities.

As noted in the trailer, Wasteland 2: Director's Cut has been well-received by critics. The original version was given a Game of the Year award in 2014 by PC World. The game comes at a time when throwback RPGs are becoming increasingly popular. The Divinity: Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity games have been major hits with the RPG community.

Like Divinity: Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland 2 caters to fans of old school RPGs for the PC with top-down cameras and party-based gameplay. RPGs such as the Baldur's Gate franchise and the first two Fallout games were extremely successful in the 1990s and continue to be cult-favorites today. In fact, the first Wasteland served as the inspiration for the earliest installments in the Fallout series. Wasteland 2 channels many of the elements that made these games - particularly Fallout and Fallout 2 - so popular. So while it makes plenty of sense why a retro-style RPG like Wasteland 2 would do well on the PC, it remains to be seen if the game will be able to bring that success to the Switch. It's possible that porting the game to the fastest-selling console in U.S. history will open up new windows of opportunity for more old school RPGs.
