Xûr is Destiny 2’s Exotic gear merchant. He appears every weekend to sell the game’s most coveted items in exchange for Legendary shards, but if you’re a casual player with limited shards to spend, it can be hard to know which of his wares is most worth your investment. That’s where we come in.

Xûr appears every Friday at 17:00 GMT (09:00 Pacific), and will stick around until the Tuesday reset. We’ll update this guide shortly after he arrives, so if you’re reading this, you need only read on to learn where he is, and which are the best items he’s selling this week.

Ever since the Forsaken expansion, Xûr’s icon no longer appears on your director, so he’s not quite as easy to track down as he used to be. That said, his appearances in the EDZ, Titan, Nessus, Io, and The Tower have so far been in the same places he frequented in vanilla Destiny 2. When he appears in the Tangled Shore or Dreaming City (as he surely will) we’ll be sure to let you know exactly where.

Xûr is back on Io this week, near the Giant’s Scar. He is selling:

Vigilance Wing, an Exotic primary rifle, for 29 legendary shards
Orpheus Rig, Exotic Hunter leg armour, for 23 legendary shards
Hallowfire Heart, Exotic Titan chest armour, for 23 legendary shards
Verity’s Brow, an Exotic Warlock helmet, for 23 legendary shards
A Fated Engram, which guarantees a non-duplicate Exotic, for 97 legendary shards.

Vigilance Wing is a handsome pulse rifle themed after the rogue Warlock Osiris – the lore tab indicates it was intended as a reward from his Trials. It fires a five-round burst, and will grant health regen and movement speed when nearby allies are killed. Its second perk, Last Stand, improves its performance when you’re the last fireteam member left alive, which seems designed to let you clutch in PvP. It’s definitely a Crucible gun – there are simply better uses for your Exotic slot in PvE – and it’s performed well for us so far: stability is high enough that the five-round burst stays accurate at medium ranges, which enables three-burst kills. Stay near your team for the occasional boost when they die. Overall: mid-to-high tier in PvP, unnecessary otherwise.

Once upon a time, Orpheus Rig was an autopick for Nightstalkers – and its legend continues. These boots will provide ability energy for every enemy tethered by your Shadowshot Super – so much energy, in fact, that they would often refill the Super meter, granting successive Shadowshots as long as you had eight or so enemies to snare (and you usually did). This in turn made Nightstalkers an autopick class for most PvE, as they could generate enough orbs to fill allies’ Super meters with ease. The Rig’s been up and down with nerfs over time, but are still well worthwhile.

Hallowfire Heart is a Titan chest that improves the recharge rate of all your Solar abilities while Hammer of Sol is charged, so obviously, it’s for Sunbreakers who are willing to hold their Super in exchange for more grenades and melee attacks. I doubt there are many of those, since Hammer of Sol is one of the Sunbreaker’s highlights, while its grenades are lacklustre. That said, the recharge buff is significant, and can be paired with sunspots through the Siegebreaker tree (remember explosive abilities can conjure these too – it’s not just your Super) for a brief period of grenade spamming. That’s us trying quite hard to legitimise this thing, though – frankly Sunbreaker just isn’t good enough right now to make Hallowfire Heart a competitive pick, especially in PvP. Avoid unless you’re swimming in shards.

Verity’s Brow offers The Fourth Magic, which boosts grenade charges for both you and your allies. Great if you’re a team player, letting you and your pals grenade spam everything that stands in your way – but you probably already knew that. Verity’s Brow is your reward for completing the Warmind campaign, which makes it fairly redundant as a Xur purchase if you’re current on even the most basic content.
