Gaming fans have had their prayers answered as Blizzard Entertainment announces that Warcraft III is getting a brand new remake. Ever since Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos' release in 2002, players have been clamoring for Blizzard to remake one of Warcraft's defining games.

After the success of Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, Blizzard had planned to release Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans. The third game slipped into development hell, was eventually canceled, and ultimately led to the release of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. Now, considering that the title went on to sell 4.5 million copies and is still held as an influential real-time strategy video game, Blizzard is understandably capitalizing on Warcraft III's legacy.

The official Blizzard site confirmed the news about Warcraft III: Reforged and has even shown off the game's impressive trailer. Coming to Windows PC in 2019, Warcraft III: Reforged will include the original Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Thrones expansion packs for a full remastering of the original game. What's more is that Blizzard's remake will do more than just tweak the graphics for next-gen PCs. Aside from characters being completely remodeled, there will also be an upgraded UI and World Editor, meaning that mods will also be supported.

Rumors of a remastered version of Warcraft III have been doing the rounds since BlizzCon 2013, while an update sparked hopes that the game might be integrated into Blizzard’s Battle.net client - along with a full remaster - in February 2018. It turns out that the real reason developers were updating Warcraft III is to allow owners of the original game the opportunity to go head-to-head with players who purchase Warcraft III: Reforged. At the moment, Blizzard is taking pre-orders for Warcraft III: Reforged and is also offering the Spoils of War Edition, along with in-game unlockables for other Blizzard titles like World of Warcraft.

Though diehard fans have been anticipating the announcement of Warcraft 4, the upcoming remake still deserves just as much enthusiastic anticipation. This is the game that set the wheels in motion World of Warcraft after all, very much earning the respect it deserves. And, though it may not seem quite as fresh as an entirely brand new installment, there's a solid chance that Warcraft III: Reforged has potential to live up to its own hype, bringing the acclaimed RTS swinging the mighty Doomhammer into 2019 as one of the year's biggest PC titles.
