Video game developer Obsidian and publisher Paradox are announcing that they are working on an entirely new project called Tyranny, a role-playing title that will ask players to be part of an evil empire that has managed to defeat good and now needs to find a way to rule the world that it dominates.

The two companies are saying that they will offer a non-linear story and that gamers will have to make morally ambiguous decisions and will then have to deal with the consequences of their choices.
Feargus Urquhart, Chief executive officer of Obsidian Entertainment, states, "With Tyranny, we love the twist we’ve put on the world which started with the premise 'What if evil already won?' Coupled with that is our ongoing dedication to giving our players games full of choice and consequence. Games they can play not just once, but many times."
The forces of evil are led by Kyros the Overlord, and gamers will become his agents, moving across the world, interacting with the population and empowered to be both judge and executioner if the need arises.
Fredrik Wester, Chief Executive Officer of Paradox Interactive, says that his team has worked with Obsidian on Tyranny since the game was first conceived and that it will allow his company to take another stop into the role-playing genre.
The game is expected to arrive in 2016 only on the PC, presumably during the fall.
Tyranny can introduce more choices and dilemmas to the genre Stardock offered a take on the "Evil has won" concept with its own Sorcerer King, which used a mix of strategy and RPG elements, but Obsidian seems more interested in the effects of interpersonal interactions than in the global politics and the leadership decisions associated with the idea.
The images associated with Tyranny so far seem to indicate that the studio is aiming to offer about the same level of graphics quality as for Pillars of Eternity, but the company needs to deliver more information about party size, the combat mechanics, and the way player choices will influence the narrative of the game.
Some fans are unhappy that, following the success of their crowdfunded classic RPG, the team at Obsidian is abandoning it for the moment to explore another fantasy world.
The concept that underpins Tyranny has the power to deliver interesting choices and interactions, especially if the developers focus on making it as replayable as possible.
