The NPD group released its findings for US console sales for the month of December and once again, PlayStation 4 came out on top. Lifetime sales of the console are now just a fraction under 36 million units.

In a statement, Sony told us it wanted to "thank fans and partners for making PlayStation 4 the top selling console in December and in 2015."

"More than 5.7 million PS4s and 35 million PS4 games were sold through to consumers worldwide" during the season, Sony said.

In November, the PS4 was the top selling console, with games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops III selling more on Sony's console than Xbox One or PC for the month leading up to the holidays.

Its monthly dominance adds up to the PS4 being the best selling console of the entire year, Sony noted.

For the most part, Sony's PlayStation 4 has dominated the sales numbers since it was first released, but the Xbox One managed to take the top spot on occasion, with its most recent upset coming from October's NPD results. The numbers for Xbox One in October were no doubt helped by the release of Halo 5, which, in spite having only been available for less than a week out of the entire month.
