Respawn Entertainment has detailed the brand new Ranked Play system that's set to go live in Titanfall through game update #8 later today, confirming just how the mechanic works and how it's going to be available as part of a beta inside the first-person shooter.

Titanfall launched way back in spring of this year and delivered a pretty addictive first-person shooter experience in which players were able to control both highly agile pilots but also powerful yet slow titans on the battlefield.

The title got plenty of bonus game modes and mechanics via free updates, not to mention all-new maps via premium expansions, in order to keep things interesting.

Ranked Play launches with the latest patch

Besides bringing forth plenty of improvements and changes to the title, Titanfall game update #8 also brings forth the Ranked Play system, according to the official announcement.

However, instead of just offering a different playlist for those who want to really test their skills, Respawn is doing something different with the new mechanic, as it relies on a special Rank Chip that can be turned on or off by players.

The Rank Chip, according to Titanfall Designer Mackey McCandlish, tracks the performance of a player and starts with a Bronze 1 rank. Depending on how fast players achieve their dynamic goals, the chip starts progressing through Silver and Gold ranks.

However, it can be easily turned on and off, depending on the desire of the player, so that it won't end up tracking some really poor performances.
The Rank Chip displays icons for others to see

As you progress through the ranks, the chip is going to display various icons for those who also have their chips turned on, according to the designer.

"Beyond the satisfying thrill that comes from meeting or exceeding the expectations of a computer, your Rank Chip also has something a bit more substantial to share. Rank Icons! When you turn on the chip, your Gen Tag will be replaced with an icon representing your current rank," McCandlish explains.

The Ranked Play mechanic goes live as a beta for Gen 10 players

Respawn admits that the Ranked Play system needs some real-world testing, so it will go live as part of a beta stage only for players who've reached the Gen 10 rank. They'll also receive invitations to offer to friends who haven't reached that rank just yet, but once the testing concludes, Respawn is going to allow all owners of the game to access it.

Titanfall game update #8 is set to debut on PC and Xbox One today, October 23.
