Thief's customisation options are designed to empower the player to have their own experience, Square Enix has said.

Players are able to start a new campaign with a list of modifications - from chapter only saves, disabling focus, removing resources and no alerts - which give the player extra multipliers for their campaign score to compete in global leaderboards.

This, alongside a vast array of display settings - where players can remove almost all heads-up display elements - followed feedback that expectations for the reboot were "very wide".

"A game like Thief has a lot of fans, and a lot of expectation that comes along with it - it was 16 years ago since the first one, and 10 years since the last instalment," lead level designer Daniel Windfeld told Digital Spy.

"So when we started announcing, for us, it was important to keep the main pillars. But as we progressed we started getting feedback with community managers, collaborating all the information from support and playtesting, [and] it became apparent that expectations were very wide.

"What we wanted to do is say, let's create a scenario with a game as a baseline and then allow players to adopt the experience and tailor it to their own needs."

He added: "It's a lot about empowering the player to tailor the experience. We don't want to judge the player; you create scenarios, create obstacles, and we say, hands off, you enjoy the experience."

Developer Eidos Montreal has assured fans that there will be multiple approaches to every task in Thief, including playing the entire game without killing.

It was recently confirmed that the game will run at the higher resolution of 1080p on PS4, compared to 900p on the Xbox One.

Thief will be released for PC, PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on February 28 in Europe and February 25 in North America.
