‘Super Smash Bros. 3DS’ Adds Amiibo Support; New Anime Channel on the Way

It’s a big week for Nintendo’s 3DS handheld brand, which is set to see two new SKUs enter the fold in the form of the New 3DS and New 3DS XL. This week also marks the debut of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D – a handheld update of the popular N64 release – as well as the launch of the highly anticipated Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, an exclusive to the New 3DS line.

As if that wasn’t enough for 3DS owners to get excited about, Nintendo has this week also confirmed that Amiibo support is coming to Super Smash Bros. 3DS on February 10th. However, gamers will need to own the New 3DS models if they want to take advantage of the toys-to-life products.

Ever since their official debut, Amiibos have been nothing but a major success story for Nintendo, generating millions in revenue and selling out worldwide. Some Amiibos have become so rare, in fact, that Nintendo fans have been forced to turn to eBay to try and pick them up, albeit at a significant mark-up.

    Amiibos Take Over the World

Those who have found a few Amiibos, however, will have a new use for them with Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. With the Amiibos, players can store their favorite move and ability set-ups for a given character, and transport them to any other Super Smash Bros. title. They can also train Amiibos while using them, and in turn level up and develop new skills for the figures.

Amiibos represent a new and exciting wing for Nintendo, and thus far reception and sales have been overwhelmingly positive. In other words, don’t expect support for the figures to slow down anytime soon, especially with the New 3DS’ Amiibo capabilities.

    3DS Anime Channel

Alongside continued support for Amiibos, Nintendo’s future plans also apparently include a new Anime Channel that is set to go live for 3DS on February 13th. The channel will function like a video-on-demand service, offering 3DS users a variety of programming that they can purchase at their leisure.

So far, Nintendo doesn’t have too much in the way of planned programming for their Anime Channel, but the initial prospects should prove intriguing to anime fans. There’s Kirby Series 1, Pokémon: Advanced, and Inazuma Eleven Series available as of right now, with more programs planned for the future. Again, it’s strictly on-demand programming, but it’s possible that if the channel is successful it could be the start of something new for Nintendo. Perhaps this is even a sign that The Legend of Zelda Netflix series is more than just a rumor.

Do you plan on using your Amiibos with Super Smash Bros. for 3DS? Are you interested in a Nintendo anime channel?

It's a shame the Anime Channel isn't available in NA.
