Virtual reality is poised to be the most important technology to arrive for the gaming industry during this year, and it seems that Sony is aiming to make its own VR solution a product for the mass market, even if it might fail to reach the quality that its competitors can deliver.

Speaking to Polygon Masayasu Ito, a vice president in charge of the PlayStation VR solution, explains that his team is aiming to make sure that a wide range of potential customers, like the more than 30 million people who own a PlayStation 4, can pick up a headset and use it with limited restrictions.
The executive adds, "If you just talk about the high-end quality, yes, I would admit that Oculus may have better VR. However, it requires a very expensive and very fast PC. The biggest advantage for Sony is our headset works with PS4. It's more for everyday use, so it has to be easy to use, and it has to be affordable. This is not for the person who uses a high-end PC. It's for the mass market."
Sony seems to understand virtual reality as a way to enhance the kinds of experiences that players get from the PlayStation 4 rather than a way to replace current gaming setups.
PlayStation VR does not have an official launch or price Sony might be getting ready to reveal more official details about its tech and the headset that it will deliver to gamers, with rumors saying that actual release will arrive either in the summer of this year or before the end of 2016 if information from Gamestop is to be believed.
PlayStation VR currently has about 100 titles in development and Sony will probably find a way to use it to power the normal PlayStation 4 interface.
At the moment, the Oculus Rift is getting ready to ship the first consumer units to those who have placed a pre-order and gamers who want one need to make sure that their computer can provide the processing power it requires before spending 599 dollars or Euro.
The HTC and Valve made Vive is also coming in April of this year and will introduce full room virtual reality with an ever higher price point.
The PlayStation VR could be offered for around the price of a new PlayStation 4 and Sony might also use bundles to make its own virtual reality solution more interesting.
