Sonic the Hedgehog producer Tim Miller believes fans will be pleased with the redesign of the iconic character. The movie was scheduled for release this November, but was delayed to February, 2020 in order to redesign Sonic after massive fan backlash.

Sonic the Hedgehog has received a lot of negative pre-hype. Fans were already skeptical after the first Sonic the Hedgehog poster came out. In April, Paramount Pictures released the first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer. Unfortunately, this is where things got even worse. Fans took to social media to voice mockery of the footage, and especially the design. In an unprecedented move, director Jim Fowler announced the film was going to be delayed so the team could redesign Sonic. There have been no progress updates on this, until now.

While speaking to Variety, Sonic the Hedgehog producer Miller talked about Paramount being willing to delay the film in order to redesign the title character, stating "this is a franchise, and it has to be great." Miller said:

"Look, I was with fans, and so was Jeff. When the sh-t hit the fan, I went over there and said, 'The most important thing to do, man, is say, I f-cked up.'"

As for fan reaction to the upcoming new Sonic the Hedgehog movie design, Miller thinks "fans will be pleased." All of these statements seem to point to Sonic's new design being more accurate to the games. While that's not the wording used, the fact that Miller says Sonic fans will be pleased with the redesign lends to the thought that Sonic should be appearing more like his game-self. Time will tell if that's truly the case, though.

It is interesting to think about why the studio went with the original design in the first place. Changing designs slightly for a movie adaption is common practice, and sometimes the changes are necessary in order to translate to live-action. However, when a design is changed that it loses its iconic look, that's when fans voice their disapproval. The original design in Sonic the Hedgehog got rid of the gloves, his eyes were more generic, and other things were criticized - like his human teeth. It will be interesting to see how the studio went about changing the design. It's possible Sonic will look exactly like his game-self, or he may look more game-accurate, but retain some of the features of the previous design. Hopefully fans will know later this year.
