Should you buy a PS4 Pro now, or does it make more sense to wait for the PS5 release? By November 20th, 2020, Sony's PlayStation 5 is coming during the holiday season. As the PS5’s launch day comes close, some might be looking to pick up a PS4 Pro. This guide will help you decide whether you should buy a PS4 Pro, or wait until November for the PS5.

The PS4 Pro is a more powerful version of the PS4. Launched in November of 2016, it comes with more advanced hardware than a typical PS4. The PS4 Pro’s upgrades included a GPU that is almost twice as powerful as the original, leading to improved in-game visuals and a 1 terabyte hard drive. The PS5’s specifications haven’t been fully detailed, but it will have an 8-core AMD chipset, 8K TV support and backwards compatibility with PS4 games. If you do opt to wait for the PS5, you will still be able to play anything you may have missed on the PS4.

The PS4 was a big success for Sony, but it still lacked some keys features like backwards compatibility. The PS5, on the other hand, will offer some backwards compatibility. The PS4's lack of backwards compatibility is somewhat alleviated with PlayStation’s PS Now game streaming service that allows player to stream PS3 games. The current lineup of PS5 titles is somewhat sparse. Many launch titles like The Last of Us 2 will also have a PS4 version.

PS4 Pro Or PS5?

Buying a PS4 Pro right now leaves you in a situation where you’ll have access to all of the best games Sony has to offer from the 8th generation. However, you will be unable to play anything that comes out following the end of the console’s lifespan. For as far as we know, the current generation could be seeing new games for the next few years – or it could stop immediately. It’s uncertain until an official announcement is made by Sony. The immediate benefit is that you’ll likely be paying less than you would for a next-gen console. Right now, the PS4 Pro can be found for around $300 on its own. Due to its age, you can likely expect it to go on sale. We don't know the price of PS5 yet. There are rumors that the console will cost $499 in North America. That would make it $100 more than the launch price of a PS4, and $200 more than a PS4 pro.

If you’re willing to wait a couple of years for the PS5 to have an impressive game library, buying a PS4 Pro right now wouldn’t be a bad decision. But, if you’re willing to wait, you can experience everything the PS4 has to offer, and already be set up with the next generation of gaming.
