Shadow Of The Colossus Remake Dev Confirms Next Project Is Another Remaster

Bluepoint Games, the Austin, Texas-based developer behind high-profile remake projects such as Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, The God of War Collection, and more recently the Shadow of the Colossus remaster, has teased its next project. As you might have guessed, it's going to be another remake. Bluepoint president and co-owner Marco Thrush confirmed this in an interview with Eurogamer. The site asked if Bluepoint might make an original game of its own, and Thrush responded by confirming that's not going to happen--not yet.

"Well, we could but we're doing another remake," Thrush said. "[Shadow of the Colossus] served us as a great point of growing the art team to the point where we can take on a full AAA game major scope of art content. So now our next step is, let's improve the art pipeline, let's improve the engine, let's improve workflow for artists, let's grow on the art side some more to handle our next project because it's a bit bigger. And our next focus is, all right, let's work on design and add new stuff to get to the next remake, because now that can be our sole focus of making sure that's where we put the time and everybody else, they're already at a level where we can perform."

Technical director Peter Dalton added that Bluepoint grew in team size and employee skill level with the Shadow of the Colossus project. He added that Bluepoint continues to grow and is looking to add more staffers specifically in areas where it feels weak.

"One area that we've not explored very deeply is, 'What does our design prowess looks like? What is our ability to build something original and to expand it, rather than just upgrading something?' and so we look at those things and we are constantly trying to enhance and strengthen the studio to get to a point where, yeah, doing original development or whatever comes our way, we're fully capable of doing it," Dalton said.

Bluepoint has more than 10 open positions posted on its website. The studio was founded in 2006 by people who worked on Metroid Prime.

Remakes are attractive to publishers because they oftentimes have a lower development cost relative to brand-new games. As such, when they succeed, than can be lucrative. For example, Activision's Crash Bandicoot remaster, The N. Sane Trilogy, was the best-selling PS4 remaster project in history. It's now coming to PC and Xbox One later this year.

I had no idea they were responsible for the Uncharted remakes too.

They've carved themselves out quite the niche. Remakes are generally unpopular, yet this team has developed a reputation for delivering outstanding remakes. Fair play to them, look forward to seeing what they do next. Thanks for sharing.
