Publisher Devolver Digital and developer Croteam have released a new gameplay video for Serious Sam 4, showing off some of the upcoming game’s visuals, combat, weapons, enemies, features, and more. Serious Sam 4 was announced to be in the works back in 2013 and was supposedly partially funded by the Serious Sam Humble Bundle released in the same year. But development on Serious Sam 4 was put on hold so the developers could focus on 2014’s critically-acclaimed The Talos Principle but was said to be resumed once the latter completed development.

It’s been a while since the last main entry in the Serious Sam series was released. Serious Sam 3: BFE was launched way back 2011 and since then developer Croteam has worked on the aforementioned The Talos Principle as well as the first VR game in the Serious Sam series entitled Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope, which was released in 2017. In the same year, the developer also released VR versions of the first three main entries in the series – Serious Sam VR: The First Encounter and Serious Sam VR: The Second Encounter.

The new gameplay video, posted on the Devolver Digital YouTube channel, is hosted by JT, who is part of the Devolver Special Ops team. He speaks to Croteam’s Chief Creative Officer Davor Hunski, Gameplay Designer Davor Tomicic, Graphics Engineer Dean Sekulic, and Sound Designer Damjan Mravunac, about the game’s gameplay, enemies, weapons, sound, music, and the new Legion system.

The end of the video, as well as its description, surprisingly shows Serious Sam 4 as only a Stadia and Steam release. The game will actually be a timed Stadia exclusive, which delays the release of the game on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One until its exclusivity period expires. For those on PC and Stadia though, the game will officially release sometime in August 2020.

Fans of the Serious Sam series have been waiting quite a long time for the release of Serious Sam 4. While it’s a bit disappointing that the game won’t be coming to PS4 and Xbox One at the same time as the PC and Stadia, the latter of which recently released the Serious Sam Collection, having the game release at all after so many years would still be reason enough to celebrate. Hopefully the release of Serious Sam 4 will rekindle interest in the series again and will lead to a shorter development cycle for any potential future games in the series.

Serious Sam 4 is scheduled to release exclusively on Steam and Stadia in August 2020.
