Square Enix has confirmed that it has sold over five million copies of its latest smash-hit game Final Fantasy 7 Remake – all despite the game only debuting on PlayStation 4 for its first year. The game itself is a completely from-the-ground-up recreation of the PlayStation 1 title of the same name (minus the 'Remake' descriptor), finally bringing beloved characters such as Cloud Strife from the 1997 classic back into the limelight. Given how adored the original game was, this apparent success comes as little surprise.

The FF7 remake was confirmed as an exclusive for the PS4 upon its announcement, but gamers have since learned that they can expect it to finally grace other platforms with its presence after April 10, 2021 – granting Sony a minimum of a full year of exclusivity. Despite this, Square Enix hasn't confirmed if or when it will bring Final Fantasy 7 Remake to other platforms. If the publisher does, then it will presumably arrive on next-gen platforms like Xbox Series X and PS5.

Despite being locked to the PS4 for the time being, Square Enix has begun happily touting the title with a discounted price and the confirmation that it has digitally sold through/shipped over five million copies of the game. The firm took to its official Twitter account to inform the masses of its most recent success. Evidently, it looks as if Final Fantasy 7 Remake is every bit the smash-hit release that many predicted it would be.

Of course, after the game inevitably ends up on other platforms, lifetime sales are sure to climb even higher. In this instance, FF7R is not unlike Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy's success on other platforms following its own one-year exclusivity window on PS4. Of course, this could also spell future partnerships between Sony and Square Enix, with other deals such as Spider-Man being exclusive to the PS4 version of Marvel's Avengers being a newer instance of a continued collaborative partnership between the two.

Attention is now sure to turn to the expected sequel to FF7R. While the game is presumed to still be quite a way off from release, Square Enix has confirmed that the unofficially titled Final Fantasy 7 Remake 2 is currently in development. It's unknown if this sequel will also be an exclusive game of sorts for Sony's PlayStation 5 console. Given the sales success of the first part of this revamped retelling, it would be hard to rule out such an agreement.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is currently available on PlayStation 4.
