Valve confirms that Team Fortress 2, its popular multiplayer-only first-person shooter, will once again see a Scream Fortress event take place in honor of Halloween later this week, but unlike previous years, this new edition is going to feature a revamped gift system to ensure the best experience for all players.

Team Fortress 2 may have dropped in popularity as opposed to Valve's other big projects, such as Dota 2 or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, but this doesn't mean that the studio is abandoning the free-to-play shooter.

Like always, this Halloween season marks the traditional Scream Fortress event, which turns the whole battlefield into a spookier experience, while bringing forth themed items, hats, weapons, and more to all players.

Scream Fortress 2014 revamps the gifting system

Besides the traditional celebrations, the new edition of Scream Fortress is also set to introduce an overhauled gift mechanic that's designed to prevent abuse from not-so-fair players.

More specifically, according to the official announcement, Valve believes that in previous events players would end up hurting the experience of others by using custom servers and plugins that are designed to teleport their character every time a gift spawns on the map.

"In this particular case, however, because the overwhelming majority of gifts claimed went to a tiny handful of accounts, we feel comfortable characterizing the current system as blatantly and transparently unfair: While some farming accounts claimed more than five hundred gifts just last year, the median numbers of gifts claimed was only five," Valve explains.

This year, one gift is available to all

For this year's edition, all players who log into Team Fortress 2 during Scream Fortress 2014 will be given a bundle filled with random items from this year's collection of event items, including some that would have been given via the premium crates. Those who want more goodies can unlock a second bundle by completing some of the event's achievements.

If you put the two bundles together, Valve says, the amount of items awarded to players is bigger than the five-gift average from last year. What's more, because of the new system, way more varied items are going to be up for grabs.

"Because historically the total number of gifts has been unbounded, and the distribution incredibly skewed, we have been greatly limited when it came to what sort of content we could distribute. As we're now more tightly controlling the distribution, we can grant a wider variety of more interesting content and we look forward to seeing you all get your hands on some of it in just a few days," the company explains.

Expect Scream Fortress 2014 to go live later this week, as we get closer to the real-life Halloween event.
