Rockstar Is Publishing "Groundbreaking" AAA Open-World VR Game

A Video Games Deluxe announcement has revealed Rockstar Gaames will be publishing a “groundbreaking” AAA open-world VR game. Recent rumors surrounding the company’s next addition to its popular Grand Theft Auto series have been circulating the internet for months, but nothing has been confirmed by the subsidiary or parent company, Take-Two Interactive. A June 2020 revealed the feature fans covet most from Grand Theft Auto 6 to not be VR; rather, they just want more in-depth character customization and hair styles.

With next-generation consoles looming, Rockstar has confirmed Grand Theft Auto 5 will be re-releasing on PS5 and Xbox Series X. The game’s longevity from its online element’s strong following has made it the most financially successful game in the franchise’s history, and despite the rumors regarding its unconfirmed successor, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick hinted that Grand Theft Auto 6 won’t replace its predecessor.

With the industry gearing up for the next generation, a LinkedIn announcement by Video Games Deluxe has revealed Rockstar is publishing a "AAA open world title in VR for Rockstar," which it claims to be a "ground breaking project." The post stated the company finished developing L.A. Noire: The V.R. Case Files, which initially released in 2017, and continues to work “exclusively for Rockstar in Sydney” for its seventh year. No information regarding the game itself, from genre to artwork, was provided in the post. Video Games Deluxe says they have multiple job openings for the project, “including Senior Programmers, Engine Programmer, Designer and Animator.” Those who are interested in any of those positions can open a dialogue with the company through LinkedIn.

LinkedIn users commenting on the post have expressed interest in applying to the company or becoming beta testers. One response indicated the game will most likely only be available on PS5 and PC since Xbox doesn’t lend itself to VR, and does not appear to have any plans change that with the Series X. The consensus about the prospect of a Rockstar VR title, however, seems to be that it’s an exciting idea.

L.A. Noire was a divergence from Rockstar’s typical over-the-top action RPGs. Players were thrust into the shoes of a late 1940s detective and must investigate crime scenes, put together clues, and interrogate witnesses to solve crimes. While Rockstar is most well-known for its Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead franchises, L.A. Noire provided an olive branch to gamers who wanted something a little more grounded and mentally stimulating. Moreover, given most of Rockstar’s games have shied away from VR, having a title dedicated solely to that still-primitive form of gaming will be an interesting endeavor.
