Rare Zelda Game Listed on eBay for $150,000
EBay is the ultimate playground for rare, often nerdy treasures, and one of today's listings is no exception.
Member tjcurtin1 posted a Legend of Zelda Nintendo Entertainment System prototype, a 25-year-old game the seller is calling "without a doubt the pinnacle of my collection" – for an equally important price tag of $150,000.
"I challenge anyone to come up with anything more important in the video game collecting scene," tjcurtin1 said.
The full Zelda game was released in Aug. 1987. "There is one Prototype in the world for the NES Zelda," tjcurtin1 said. "One prototype that started the launch of a generation of gamers and you are viewing it."
Also included in the $150,000 package is a VGA copy of The Legend of Zelda for Nintendo, as well as a gamepad and joystick. The game also features horseback riding, a new and key element of gameplay at the time, as well as a shifting camera system that allows for views from behind and above.
"Embark on a quest to find the Triforce, slay Ganon and save Princess Zelda in the timeless adventure game from Shigeru Miyamoto that invented the genre," tjcurtin wrote in the product description.
When the game was released in the U.S. in 1987, Nintendo launched a gold-cartridge version of the game, "so if you hadn't heard about the glory of Zelda, the shiny cart would definitely catch your attention," the seller said.
Still in its original shrink wrap with the manufacturer's seal intact, tjcurtin1 lists the product in "new" condition, with a handful of prototype and gold-edition photos available.
No offers have been made since the game was posted this afternoon. There is no set ending time for the auction.
Earlier this month, a French collector's set of complete titles for 22 game systems took in a whopping $1.2 million on eBay. Last week, meanwhile, a rare Pixar Image Computer was put on the auction site for $25,000.
