NBA 2K21 will support cross-progression for MyTEAM between current and next-gen versions, allowing players to carry over all their progress to the latest version of the game. The sports title is set to have a distinct release for each generation, rather than a post-launch update to current-gen editions for next-gen players.

Of course, 2K Games has attracted criticism for the pricing model it is using for NBA 2K21. Unlike many other publishers, who have committed to free upgrades for those who buy a game on current-gen, 2K Games is taking a different approach. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions of NBA 2K21 will be increased by $10, to $70. For those interested in trying out NBA 2K21 for the first time, a demo is now available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

2K Games has revealed that NBA 2K21 will support cross-progression across the MyTEAM mode. While no saved data will transfer across other game modes, everything from MyTEAM will transfer across to next-gen platforms. Of course, progress will only carry over for users playing on the same family of consoles, as with cross-gen releases for other games. According to Visual Concepts executive producer Erick Boenisch, players will be able to switch between the same family of consoles as much as they want, as this is not a one-time transfer. Progress from Domination, Triple Threat, and cards will carry over, as will all in-game currencies, including MyTEAM Points.

NBA 2K21 will not offer a free upgrade, so players who want access to both versions of the game will need to purchase the $99.99 "Mamba Forever Edition" of the game. The Mamba Forever Edition memorializes Kobe Bryant, who passed away earlier this year, making it a great collector's item for any NBA fan. Some fans have criticized 2K for only putting Bryant on the more expensive edition of the game, though, which they see as exploiting his death to make money.

Despite being heavily criticized by fans in recent weeks due to 2K's pricing strategy for NBA 2k21, this latest announcement will be welcomed by most players. Being able to carry over MyTEAM points and cards will make purchasing the game as soon as it released a far more attractive prospect. After all, players won't feel like they are wasting their money and will almost certainly be more willing to upgrade.

NBA 2K21 is will be available for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on September 4, 2020. It will launch for PS5, Xbox Series X, and Google Stadia later in 2020.
