Sony has launched the PlayStation 4 in its native Japan, almost three months after it landed in Europe and North America.

Scores of fans gathered outside Sony Computer Entertainment HQ in Ginza, Tokyo to become among the first in the territory to get their hands on the console.

The firm is marking the occasion with a special launch event featuring appearances from CEO Andrew House, PlayStation president Shuhei Yoshida, Metal Gear Solid's Hideo Kojima, and members of the Final Fantasy and Yakuza teams.

Sony has also rolled out a set of new trailers showcasing the console's Japanese launch lineup, including footage from inFamous: Second Son, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Watch Dogs and Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes.

The PS4's Japanese launch lineup is similar to those of its American and European counterparts, with Nobunaga's Ambition, Capcom's Strider remake and Yakuza: Ishin among the notable differences.
