It’s no secret that the PS4 has been the clear winner in this early part of the current-gen console war. Sony‘s latest platform hit the ground running when it launched in November 2013, and so far nothing seems to be holding back.

Now that more than a year has passed since the PS4‘s launch, Sony reports that they have moved 18.5 million units worldwide. Sony also had a very successful holiday season, where they sold through more than 4.1 million PS4s.

Interestingly enough, this news comes after the recent DDoS attacks that left most PS4s unusable where online services were concerned. However, this attack was disappointing because many gamers had just received PS4 consoles and was unlikely to impact sales.

A few months before the PS4 launched, analysts predicted that the console would finish with around 12 million units sold after its first year. These numbers, however, suggest that Sony’s console has been even more successful than originally predicted, leaving most of its competitors in the dust. That doesn’t mean those competitors were not successful in their own right, but Sony did well to position the PS4 for a strong debut.

While both the Xbox One and Wii U have made up considerable ground against the PS4, Sony is no doubt the clear victor for 2014. However, now that we have moved onto 2015, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the console war get even more interesting. Now that Sony actually starts to see Microsoft in their rear view mirror, it behooves them to make some moves to regain their lead.

2015 is also an interesting year because it sees many more next-gen exclusives than 2014. Games like Batman: Arkham Knight, The Witcher 3, and Star Wars Battlefront are sure to be system sellers all on their own, and that’s not counting the console exclusives like Uncharted 4 and Halo 5. Needless to say, Xbox one and PS4 will sell well based purely on the product available, but the real question is whether PS4 can sell just as well in 2015 as it did in 2014.

Were you one of the 18.5 million who picked up the PS4 over the past 13 months? Do you think PS4 will be the top seller for 2015?
