The PlayStation 4 might be the most successful home console of the current generation, moving more than 36 million units to gamers, but it seems that Sony is already thinking about introducing a new version of the device, designed to increase graphical capabilities and run titles in full 4K resolution.

The information comes from Kotaku, which has received details from developer sources who are referring to the new platform as the PlayStation 4.5, saying that the new model will be on the market alongside the older one and will sell for 400 dollars or Euro when it launches.
Sony has refused to comment on speculation or rumors and is interested in making sure that the PlayStation 4 continues to offer a lot of value to those who purchase it.
No extra details about the rumored new device are provided at the moment, but this might be Sony's way of moving towards an incremental hardware update model for its home console, designed to make sure that its computing power and other capabilities evolve over time.
Microsoft suggested that it was exploring similar ideas via statements from Phil Spencer, the leader of Xbox, but also failed to come up with any other information about the initiative and how this would affect the end-user.
An official announcement of the PlayStation 4.5, if it exists, will probably only happen in 2017 because Sony has other priorities for the current year.
PlayStation VR is coming in October The virtual reality platform is designed to only work with the PlayStation 4 and will be sold for 399 dollars or Euro, with apparently 230 developers working on creating experiences associated with it.
The launch package comes with an associated small processing unit, which Sony says is designed to handle complex tasks associated with audio and with the features linked to the Cinematic mode.
Presumably, a PlayStation 4.5 will be designed to integrate this extra bit of hardware and to make it even easier to enjoy virtual reality content while also offering 4K resolution for normal titles.
Those who have already purchased the currently available version of the Sony home console will probably be a little disappointed if Sony really reveals a new hardware version and basically tells them that their own device is moving towards obsolesce.
In the meantime, the company claims that it is working on delivering new firmware updates for the PlayStation 4 and on making sure that the launch of VR for the platform goes on without problems.
