The closer we get to San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2014, which opens its doors later today, the more obvious it has become that virtual reality (VR) will play a huge part of the show. 20th Century Fox has already revealed two VR experiences based on its X-Men and Sleepy Hollow franchises that will be shown off at the event, and Warner Bros. has joined in with a VR experience for its upcoming movie Into the Storm. Today sees another studio revealing a VR experience for the event as Legendary Pictures has announced a new VR experience based on 2013′s Pacific Rim.

Named Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot, the experience sits players in the gigantic fighting machine that starred in Guillermo Del Toro’s epic, using the Oculus Rift VR head-mounted display (HMD). In fact the experience was created with direct input from Del Toro himself, who told The Wrap that the technology was ‘great for a single user’, suggesting that videogames would be best suited for it. As for movies, the famed director stated that it would be used best with experiences that are ‘designed specifically as a ride’.

A trailer for the experience can be seen below. Players will be able to look around the cockpit of the Jaeger to see their co-pilot, with one of the movie’s monsters approaching from the outside. It’s not clear if this experience will be operating on the Oculus Rift’s first development kit (DK1), or its second (DK2), which is shipping its first units to pre-order customers this week.

SDCC runs from 24th – 27th July 2014, with more VR news sure to come from the event over the weekend. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all updates, reporting back with the latest.
