While the last Diablo announcement about Diablo Immortal may have left some hardcore fans with a bitter taste in their mouth, series regulars should be pleased with the latest development for the franchise. For the first time in the series history, people will be able to purchase the original Diablo game online and DRM-free.

Fans were clamoring for Diablo 3 to be made available on the Switch last year and got their wish. Now, Blizzard is going to one step further than a solid port and making the classic first installment available for purchasing online. In order to do this, they've teamed up with what may seem like an unlikely storefront to sell this product.

In an update on the Diablo III home page, Blizzard has officially announced that they will be teaming up with GOG to sell the original Diablo game online. The DRM-free store is going to be one place that you'll be able to buy the original Diablo, which is odd considering that Blizzard has its own Battle.net store to distribute titles. That being said, you will also be able to buy Diablo on the Battle.net store — this version, however, is going to be a little different from the one on the GOG store.

The game is going to be available in English only, and it will cost USD $9.99. If you buy it from the Blizzard store, you can expect online functionality and an experience identical to the game's original release. However, if you purchase it from GOG.com, then you'll be buying a version of the original Diablo with some bells and whistles attached, including improved audio, support for better resolution and screen refresh rates, and other bugfixes. However, this version of the game won't be able to connect to Battle.net.

If you're wanting to pick up the original Diablo online and replicate your past experiences, then you're in luck; this release is going to have 20 FPS graphics for those that really want a sense of nostalgic authenticity. With the re-release of other legacy Blizzard titles like Warcraft Classic and Warcraft 3, it looks like there's going to be a lot of reliving the glory days in store for fans of the studio. Now all that remains is for us to get an official Warcraft 2 re-release date and all will be well with the world.
