At its upcoming FanDome 2021 event, DC will give updates on its two in-development video games: Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Gotham Knights. The former is the first non-Batman entry in the Arkhamverse, built on Rocksteady Studios' Batman: Arkham games, and the latter carries on the Batman legacy with a game about other members of the Bat Family. These two are DC's only projects to stack up against Marvel's four upcoming AAA games, but both promise something Marvel's don't.

The last time DC released more than two games in one year, including mobile titles, was 2017, which saw the launch of Injustice 2, Wonder Woman: Rise of the Warrior, and Batman: The Enemy Within. 2021 brought only DC Battle Arena, a MOBA game for mobile devices, and DC Super Hero Girls: Teen Power, a cute action game that doesn't follow in the gritty footsteps of many other DC titles. Given both Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Gotham Knights were announced in 2020, their absence this year was no doubt a letdown for many fans, but they may just be worth waiting for.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was revealed at DC FanDome 2020. Most of the information on the game comes from its announcement trailer, which depicts the Suicide Squad - consisting of Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark - battling Brainiac's minions, only to come face to face with an imposing, brainwashed Superman. This new addition to the Batman: Arkham series will be playable solo or with up to four players in co-op, giving fans a chance to play as all four Squad members. With only a cinematic trailer revealed so far (though that could change at DC FanDome 2021), it seems Kill the Justice League will likely be released after Gotham Knights.

DC's Upcoming Video Games Focus On Co-Op

Announced alongside Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Gotham Knights was originally set to be released in 2021 but was later delayed to 2022. Though Gotham Knights won't technically be a part of the Arkhamverse, it appears to share a key element with Suicide Squad - no Batman. Following the death of Bruce Wayne, the four members of the fan-dubbed Bat Family are called to action to protect Gotham. Redhood, Nightwing, Batgirl, and Robin all have their own unique playstyles and abilities, and, like Suicide Squad, players will have the option of solo play or co-op.

While it's a shame DC doesn't have more on the horizon - at least not yet - its two upcoming games do promise something unique; Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, Midnight Suns, Spider-Man 2, and Wolverine are all single-player games. If DC can successfully execute on two co-op titles, especially in the wake of the Marvel's Avengers game's failure, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League and Gotham Knights could be a refreshing change of pace.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Gotham Knights are slated to launch sometime in 2022.
