Nintendo adds Game Boy Advance classics to Wii U Virtual Console
Come April of this year, Nintendo will no longer be facing unmitigated disaster. You heard that right — Game Boy Advance games are coming to the Wii U Virtual Console. Nintendo is saved.
While the above sentiment isn’t accurately representing the gravity of the GBA additions, which is very low, Nintendo adding GBA games to the Wii U Virtual Console is at least a nice treat for the four of us that own a Wii U and want to replay good games that released over a decade ago.
Remember, the Game Boy Advance had some phenomenal games and series, such as the two Golden Sun games, a handful of Castlevania entries, a couple of Fire Emblem games, and some Metroid installments.
Unfortunately, this is still Nintendo we’re dealing with, and the GBA games will release very slowly and in tiny groups, as is Virtual Console tradition. The first group will consist of Metroid Fusion, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and Super Mario 3 Advanced: Yoshi’s Island. Those were all strong titles when they initially released — particularly Fusion — and likely hold up today. A Japanese graphic floating around the web also shows Advanced Wars, Golden Sun, and F-Zero.
One of the ways Nintendo can inject some life into its flailing Wii U is by releasing a flood of classic quality games, rather than hooking the Virtual Console up to the slow drip of titles that is usually employed. Allowing people to play Golden Sun for the millionth time won’t save the Wii U more than developing fun original titles will, but it at least may get some people to actually turn the console on.
Nintendo did not reveal the prices or specific release date of the games, but April is only a couple of months away.
