It’s been a while since the industry has seen a great Tony Hawk game. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD received middling reviews two years ago, and mobile title Tony Hawk’s Shred Session is still stuck in development. The most famous skateboarder of all-time has teased fans twice in the last 3 months, first leaking news of a new console game on his Twitter, and then following that up by confirming it is in development for PlayStation 4 at Sony’s CES 2015 keynote.

But the one thing Hawk never officially said was whether this game would be a return to the classic franchise that started it all, or something that would move in a different direction. This uncertainty appears to have ended yesterday, when Hawk referred to the new game as “THPS” on his Instagram. It looks like the upcoming game will indeed have Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater in the title.

Details for the game are still scarce at this point. Hawk did tell the crowd at CES last month that the game was further along in development than he thought. Whether it’s a full retail game or a downloadable title is still up in the air, however. Also unconfirmed is if the game will show up on any other consoles besides the PlayStation 4; Hawk clearly wouldn’t have been able to say the word “Xbox” during a Sony keynote.

While it’s been a long time since the Tony Hawk franchise was in its heydey, the game still has a passionate fan base. Just take a look at the comments on that Instagram post for confirmation. It’s true that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD didn’t sell as well as publisher Activision may have hoped, but some of the blame can probably be laid at the feet of developer Robomodo and the subsequent poor reviews.

It’s still unclear who exactly is developing this new game. The franchise’s original developer Neversoft was merged with Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward last year. Given the way that the studio set its own logo on fire prior to the move was seen by some as confirmation that it was leaving the past behind. Moreover, it’s assumed that at least some of Neversoft’s former team is working with Infinity Ward on a new Call of Duty. Whether or not they have enough manpower left for another project is not known.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is in development for PlayStation 4 and will release this year.
