Fallout 4 may be the first title that comes to mind whenever someone mentions post-apocalyptic video games, but Mad Max – Avalanche Studios’ upcoming take on the popular film franchise – is poised to remind gamers there’s more than one option when it comes to action in the Wasteland. As a matter of fact, ever since its preview at E3 2013 a couple of years ago, fans have been clamoring to know more about what kind of characters will populate the various environments alongside “Mad” Max Rockatansky, especially after its most recent film counterpart became an explosive success at the box office this summer.

While our last impressions of Mad Max were at E3 2015 about a month ago, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Avalanche Studios have yet to tease out all of the details about the action game before it races into stores this September. Now, as it happens, both companies are officially giving another glimpse of the release with an official trailer for Mad Max that focuses on the various fortified outposts – otherwise called strongholds – located throughout the Wasteland’s open world.

As the footage above shows, Max makes his rounds among some of the game’s reinforced garrisons and runs into a slew of colorful characters, such as Jeet, Gutgash, Pink Eye and Deep Friah. While exploring these encampments, our protagonist finds himself struggling with both internal strife and external forces, and the strongholds contain the keys to the woes that plague him. In order to put the pieces of his life back together, Max must forge several strained alliances as he gets ready to face the megalomaniac warlord known to his enemies as Scabrous Scrotus.

Mad Max Trailer Introduces Strongholds Feature

Although the trailer reveals another layer of rich storytelling, frenetically paced violence, and brooding energy to Mad Max, the game might not get the recognition it deserves, as its release date falls on the same day as the hotly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. Plus, as previously mentioned, Fallout 4 will hit the stores hot on Mad Max‘s heels, and it’s arguable that most gaming fans already have their bottle caps set aside for Bethesda’s next installment instead.

However, one of the gameplay features that ought to set Mad Max aside from its competitors is its inclusion of combat with vehicles in an open world. Based on most of the videos shown, the automobile battles contain some of the most gloriously destructive mayhem that one could hope for in a game like this, especially when the titular hero’s Magnum Opus car is at the center of the chaos. At any rate, once Mad Max finally releases, we’ll see if the title has what it takes to reach Valhalla.

Mad Max is set to release on September 1, 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
