‘Mortal Kombat X’ Full Roster Confirmed

Even as we neared the release of Mortal Kombat X on April 14th, many fans continued to hold out hope that the game’s roster might eventually include their favorite character or characters. Today, however, NetherRealm Studios seemingly closed the door on roster additions, confirming the cast of 29 Mortal Kombat X fighters.

News of the full roster comes via today’s Kombat Kast, in which NetherRealm Studios gave gamers a closer look at the mobile version of Mortal Kombat X and showed off some new character variations for fighters like Sonya Blade. But hidden among that presentation was our first full look at the finished Mortal Kombat X roster.

Obviously, there is still a chance that NetherRealm has a surprise up its sleeve, but this is the first time we’ve seen the roster stretch across the entire screen. Not to mention, this roster included all four DLC characters and pre-order fighter Goro. For all intents and purposes, the build that we saw today is as close to the final build as players are going to get, at least in terms of the character select screen.

With that, come some questions about the many rumored Mortal Kombat X fighters that popped up over the past months. Everyone from Rain to Bo Rai Cho to Baraka was tossed around as potential roster additions – some even had in-game assets – but it appears they will not be playable.

Here’s a full list of who will be playable, though:

    Cassie Cage
    D’Vorah
    Ermac
    Erron Black
    Ferra & Torr
    Goro
    Jacui Briggs
    Jason
    Jax
    Johnny Cage
    Kano
    Kenshi
    Kitana
    Kotal Kahn
    Kung Jin
    Kung Lao
    Liu Kang
    Mileena
    Predator (DLC)
    Quan Chi
    Raiden
    Reptile
    Scorpion
    Shinnok
    Sonya Blade
    Sub-Zero
    Takashi Takeda
    Tanya (DLC)
    Tremor (DLC)

With Mortal Kombat X taking the franchise forward, and adding new characters like D’Vorah and Jacqui Briggs, it was inevitable that some fighters were not going to make the cut. Still, that doesn’t diminish gamers’ disappointment when they see their favorites are not in Mortal Kombat X. NetherRealm was plenty prepared for the fan backlash, though, as they dealt with the same thing with Mortal Kombat 9. It says a lot when an iconic MK fighter like Liu Kang sneaks in just under the buzzer.

That being said, Mortal Kombat X does boast a fairly eclectic cast of characters, from intriguing newcomers to old standbys. DLC for the game will also add a touch of added flair, thanks to Jason Voorhees and the Predator, who are filling out the Freddy Krueger role this time around.

No doubt, MK fans will say that Jason and Predator took two precious spots away from their favorites, but clearly this is a move to expand the franchise’s reach? We’ll find out how big Mortal Kombat X is in less than two weeks.

What do you think of Mortal Kombat X’s final roster? Who is the most glaring omission?

Mortal Kombat X releases April 14, 2015 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
