Mirror's Edge seems simultaneously like both the best and worst game for VR. On the one hand, its first-person movement seems tailor-made for the gut-wrench thrill of VR. On the other, it would definitely make you throw up.
During our huge preview of the new game, we put that dichotomy to Mirror's Edge Catalyst's lead designer Erik Odelsahl and lead producer Amo Mostofi, and asked if they'd ever considered a VR version of the game.
"You're right," said Mostofi, "I think this game has so much potential, it's the best and the worst, but from our end, we never specifically looked at Mirror's Edge as a VR vessel [...] I think if we are ever going to do anything with VR, we would want to build something specifically for VR."
Odeldahl went on to confirm DICE's interest in a bespoke VR project:
"As a studio, it's definitely something we're looking at. I think the important thing here is that VR is such a different thing. I mean if we do it, we should do it right. So, it's going to take research and it's going to take a proper implementation for it."
Considering that DICE is advertising for VR-centric designers to work with its Frostbite engine, that project might be closer than you'd think.
Mirror's Edge Catalyst, a reboot of DICE's 2008 first-person free-running game, will be released on May 24. Our full preview of the game is live now.
