Microsoft might be talking a lot about the gaming opportunities opened up by the launch of the Windows 10 operating system, but the company is apparently uninterested in launching a competitor to the Steam digital distribution system from Valve.

The company did try to offer an alternative service with Games for Windows, but it failed to deliver quality and was forced to take the entire solution down, with the games that used it switching to alternative solutions.

Kevin Unangst, the senior director for PC gaming in the Xbox group, tells PC Gamer at Gamescom 2015 that he believes Steam should actually be even more successful because it offers a single story approach for the platform and some unique features.

He adds, "Over time do we want more developers to come over to our store and offer it in addition to Steam? Absolutely. Is competition good for people? Absolutely. But our goal right now isn't to do anything else other than support Steam and help it run great on Windows 10."

Microsoft has not said exactly what kind of features the Windows 10 Store will offer to video game developers to become more attractive than the Valve digital distribution solution.

The Xbox One remains the focus for the foreseeable future

The launch of Windows 10 is giving Microsoft new ways to emphasize the features of its home console, with a new app that powers streaming options and allows the platform to be controlled from a PC.

In the future, the integration between the two devices will be increased, and some titles will even offer cross-platform play.

But Microsoft is still talking about Xbox One exclusives, apart from the ones coming this holiday season, which means that there are major games that it does not plan to bring to the PC, be it powered by Windows 10 or not.

At the moment, the PlayStation 4 from Sony is leading sales for current-gen devices both worldwide and in the United States.

Microsoft believes that coming experiences like Halo 5: Guardians, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Forza Motorsport 6 will increase Xbox One sales significantly before the end of the year.
