The Wii U was once seen as dead in the water, but the console has had a solid turnaround in the last 12 months. The releases of Mario Kart 8 and the latest Super Smash Bros have both been met with massive critical acclaim and huge commercial success. Other titles, such as Zelda spin-off Hyrule Warriors, have also helped Nintendo’s ailing console have a second wind in the console market.

Nintendo is clearly pushing for a comeback after a disappointing couple of years, and has doubled down on content and hardware for 2015. The new 3DS was released in February, and several highly anticipated games will become available in the coming months. Colorful shooter Splatoon will be released this May, whilst Yoshi’s Woolly World has been announced for a Fall launch. It follows on from the release of Mario Party 10 last month, although the party game received middling reviews.

Now, another highly anticipated title has had its launch period narrowed down. Mario Maker, the title that will allow players to create their own Super Mario levels, has been confirmed for a September release window. The news was revealed in the recent Nintendo Direct broadcast, alongside the news about a variety of new amiibo figures, a brand new 200cc mode for Mario Kart 8, and the April release of free-to-play 3DS title Pokemon Rumble World.

Mario Maker will be released just in time for a massive Nintendo milestone: the 30th anniversary of the first Super Mario Bros game. 1985 saw the NES launch of one of the most successful platforming titles of all time, and one that propelled the moustachioed Italian plumber to stardom. Since Mario Maker will allow users to create their own Mario levels, the title could be a fitting celebration of the anniversary of the release of Super Mario Bros.

This release schedule for Mario Maker was not always part of the plan, however. Nintendo was originally aiming to release the title earlier in 2015, but the project was forced to have a slight delay. In spite of this, Mario Maker is still one of the most anticipated titles coming up for Wii U owners, and will no doubt have a part to play in the “fun ways” Nintendo intends to celebrate the Super Mario Bros anniversary.

Mario Maker has the potential to be a game changer for the 2D Mario series. Players will be able to create levels of their own choosing, changing between the sprite styles of generations of classic titles. Perhaps most importantly, players will be able to download content created by other users. Given that Mario ROM hacks have become incredibly popular in their own right, a legitimized form of fan-produced content has the potential to be a smash hit.

Mario Maker will release this September, exclusively for Wii U.
