If there’s one post-apocalyptic property that can be considered among the most iconic, there’s little doubt that Mad Max would come out on top. Its portrayal of a hostile wasteland dominated by motorcycle gangs has long stood as a foundation for how the public perceives a post-apocalyptic landscape. With a game based on the property on its way, fans finally have an ideas of how long they have to wait before living out all their high-octane dreams.

Coming in the form of a massive open-world environment, Mad Max seems like the perfect candidate to make the transition to the world of gaming. With games like Borderlands having drawn upon its iconic subject matter for years, the move was only a matter of time. Having already got a look at the wasteland they will be exploring, fans will no doubt be happy to learn that the game has received a firm release date for this coming fall.

According to Game Informer, Mad Max will be launching alongside Metal Gear Solid 5 on September 1 of this year. It’s a notably late release date considering the game’s original projection of a 2014 launch, but it’s hard to retain any sense of frustration with the wide open roads of Australia on the horizon and a release firmly dated. The direct competition with Metal Gear Solid 5 will likely be a difficult struggle, but if played right, the exposure could be just the boost that Avalanche Studios needs to get more eyes on the title.

In addition to news of the game’s fall release date, it was also reveled that the game will be forgoing its last-gen versions in order to focus on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Considering the fact that Dying Light recently faced a similar change as it moved toward release, it’s looking more and more like gamers who have held off on purchasing next-gen software will find themselves faced with less gaming options moving forward. It’s an unfortunate change, but one that is to be expected each time there’s a generational shift.

Taking into account the game’s focus on vehicular combat and scavenging in the wasteland, Mad Max is shaping up to be every bit as faithful to its subject matter as fans could have hoped. With 2015 quickly filling up with exciting large-scale releases, there’s no denying that gamers have quite a lot to get excited about as the year progresses.
